RIKON REVIEW: GHOST-WRITER

ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT BY IRV RIKON

MICHAEL HOLLINGER'S GHOST-WRITER AT FLORIDA STAGE

If you go to see Michael Hollinger's Ghost-Writer at FLORIDA STAGE'S new home in the KRAVIS CENTER -- and you should! -- just close your eyes for several moments and listen as his characters speak. Mr. Hollinger writes prose for the stage, but his is the language of poetry. In an era when swear-words are all the rage, here is a man who loves the English language, and just to hear the rhythms and cadences of his speech is a joy!

Perhaps that sounds old-fashioned, but it's in keeping with the play, which is set in "An austerely furnished room in New York City, 1919." A prim woman, Myra Babbage, (Kate Eastwood Norris,) sits before a typewriter. She's looking for employment as a typewriter which, when the machine was first introduced, referred to the person who typed rather than to the mechanism. Today, she would probably be regarded as a private secretary. Her would-be employer, novelist Franklin Woolsey, (J. Fred Shiffman,) stands at the rear of the room gazing out the window. He's an older man, rather stern and very precise. When at first he dictates his narrative to her, he speaks rapidly and includes the punctuation he wants her to use. She gets everything exactly right. He's pleasantly surprised and hires her on the spot.

Mr. Woolsey has a wife, Vivian, (Lourelene Snedeker,) a proper fashion plate, whose relationship with her husband appears more cordial than loving. Vivian comes in and goes out of the room from time to time, becoming progressively more jealous of Myra, since the typewriter spends more time with her husband than does she.

There is no sex, no physical intimacy between the author and his typist, but there is a continuously warming work relationship that evolves into a close bond. She knows -- feels -- his thoughts so clearly, he permits her to correct his punctuation and, later, his words. She suggests words of her own that he prefers to his. The bond grows, almost imperceptibly, silently, into love.

Then, although he still stands in the room, we are informed that Mr. Woolsey has died. Myra, the ghost-writer, types his every word as he continues to dictate. But is it her words she writes or his? That's what Vivian wants to know. She threatens to destroy the manuscript she is convinced is not her husband's. Myra is equally convinced she types the words of the ghost. And she listens to his posthumous declaration that he has always loved her.

I'm not usually drawn to ghost stories, but this is part ghost story, part love story. It's sweet. It's enchanting. It's beautifully written and acted by a wonderful trio of players. I could hardly ask for anything more.

Yet ask I shall. This is a technical matter: The new Florida Stage is a thrust theater with some few seats on either side of the stage flanking it. My partner and I have sat several times in these seats, but there's a problem. When cast members speak out to the audience, their backs are turned to those sitting in some of these side seats, making it difficult at times to hear what is being said. Can small speakers not be placed somewhere along the sides? Again, this refers only to a few seats. The play itself is a big winner.

PLAY REVIEW: PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING DINNER WITH FRIENDS AT PALM BEACH DRAMAWORKS

Donald Marguilies' Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Dinner with Friends, running now through April 17 at Palm Beach Dramaworks in downtown West Palm Beach, opens one winter morning in the kitchen of Karen and Gabe's Connecticut home. The young married couple are entertaining Beth, who's usually accompanied on such occasions by husband Tom. Tom's apparently out of town, but when Beth suddenly starts to cry and the hosts ask what's wrong, she says Tom has left her. So: What happens to two married couples who have been close friends for years when one marriage falls apart? That's the question raised by the playwright, who takes the position that close friends are like family, feeling the others' pain and even taking much of it upon themselves.

All of us at one time or another have had the unhappy experience of saying something we realize too late we shouldn't have said. Or, perhaps reversely, we recognize too late that someone's in trouble; there were warning signs, but we said nothing when we might have spoken out and possibly saved the day. There follows much soul-searching, so to say, which is the essence of this absorbing play.

In Scene Two of Act One, Tom returns to Beth: Accusations, recriminations and shouting follow. Who's to blame? How, when did things go wrong? Can anything be salvaged?

In Scene Three, Karen and Gabe discuss the dinner and the marriages, that of their friends and their own. A bit of guilt enters: They had introduced Tom, a lawyer, and Beth, an artist, to each other.

Scene One of Act Two takes place in Martha's Vineyard twelve and a half years earlier on the happy day when Tom and Beth first met.

Scene Two, occurring a few months after the events in Act One, finds Karen and Gabe still affected by their friends' break-up. But Karen blames everything on Tom, and she wants nothing to do with him. Gabe somewhat weakly defends Tom.

Scene Three brings Tom and Gabe together iin a Manhattan bar. Tom, surprisingly, has a new love. He's looking forward to getting married. (Will he be repeating the mistakes of the past?) By contrast, Gabe reports that Karen is having "hot flashes". Love-making isn't quite what it used to be.

One more scene follows, but I won't give away the ending.

The play is directed flawlessly by J. Barry Lewis and acted the same way by Jim Ballard, Eric Martin Brown, Erin Joy Schmidt and Sarah Grace Wilson. The players were so good that just a few minutes into the work I almost forgot they were acting and not the real thing!

Palm Beach Dramaworks promotes itself with the slogan "Theatre To Think About". I liked this play a lot because it caused me to do just what the slogan says. But when I thought, I felt truly sorry for these people. They're lost and groping for the way ahead. Young, in their late '40s, upper-middle class, respectable, they outwardly live "The American Dream". Yet here they are, inwardly terribly lost. And I wondered, What will they be like when they're retired senior citizens? What will they be like?

PLAY REVIEW: NEXT FALL BY GEOFFREY NAUFFTS AT BOCA'S CALDWELL

Two men of slighty different generations meet and move in together as lovers. The younger man is religious. The older is not. Several other people engage them: a sympathetic female friend; a less sympathetic male lover; parents of the younger man. Their story is told by Geoffrey Nauffts in his Tony-nominated play, Next Fall, which is now being produced by the Caldwell Theatre Company in the Count de Hoernle Theatre in Boca Raton.

The story is basic, but the playwright peppers it by raising several thorny religious questions. Some examples: The younger man prays a lot: could a devout "gay" be admitted into heaven? Is there life after death? And he sweetens his plot with some light banter.

Assessing this play is not easy, mainly for the reason it's hard to get inside the playwright's head and know where he really wants to take us. The work is set in "various locations in New York City from 2004 - 2009". But there are multiple scenes that change quickly, no doubt to give the stagework a motion picture-type flow, yet despite the gallant efforts of the technical staff headed by Tim Bennett and Thomas Salzman, Scenic and Lighting Designer respectively, the locales and dates sometimes fail to register as quickly in one's mind. This is emphasized by the fact the play is promoted as a "comedy-drama", and the scenes careen without warning from funny to deadly serious. So much so that in viewing it the play sometimes reminded my of Neil Simon's The Odd Couple. In this case, their different attitudes towards religion lends them the oddness, and as in the Neil Simon offering, one of these men is a hypochondriac, a ready source of humor. But whereas Mr. Simon in his early career wrote slice-of-life comedies, the situation Mr. Nauffts presents is not comic except that he stretches to make it so, and the one-liners to me seem out of place. A bit more affection, fewer laughs and less jerky motions in the playscript woud help this play a lot.

Michael Hall, the Caldwell Theatre's co-founder and Artistic Director until he semi-retired late season, returns to direct this production, and he does so with aplomb. The cast, headed by Tom Wahl and Josh Canfield, is fine. For the most part, Mr. Wahl dominates when he's onstage.

RIKON REVIEW: JOLSON AT THE WINTER GARDEN AT THE MALTZ THEATER

JOLSON AT THE WINTER GARDEN! IS AT THE MALTZ

If you're old enough to have loved Al Jolson, you can see and hear Mike Burstyn portray him at the MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE in a vehicle entitled Jolson At the Winter Garden! Mr. Burstyn, New York born but one of Israel's most beloved artists, sings virtually all the famous songs associated with the self-styled "World's Greatest Entertainer". Created and written by Mr. Burstyn and Bill Castellino, who was also one of the creators of Cagney, this is not quite a concert, nor does it have a "book". It could be a one-man show with musicians, but it isn't that either. Three back-up singers accompany him, and one briefly acts as "Ruby," who was actually Ruby Keeler, a major star in her own right, a fact ignored here. What you get are songs like "Swanee," "Rockabye Your Baby," "Toot Toot Tootsie," "April Showers," "Sitting on Top Of the World," "Sonny Boy" and "My Mammy". In his day, Jolson turned all of these, and more, into big hits.

For those of you who are younger, Al Jolson appeared in the first "talking" motion picture, The Jazz Singer, in which he played the son of a Jewish cantor, as he was in real life, who aspired to be a "showbusiness" entertainer. The movie caused a sensation, and suddenly "talkies" were in. Two films were made about him, The Jolson Story and Jolson Sings Again, both starring Larry Parks. A clip of Parks as Jolson opens this show. It's from the films and his recordings that I know Jolson; he was slightly before my time. On the other hand, my parents thought he was great.

Looking back, Al was sort of the Elvis of his day. He swiveled his hips, mostly from side to side, and he moved about in a dynamic way that gave him sensual as well as dramatic attention. He came to public notice in the days of vaudeville, so that unlike performers of today, he could project and be heard in a big theater like New York's Winter Garden without the use of a microphone.

As I've noted, this show is mainly a compilation of songs, which Mr. Burstyn sings serviceably, although to my own tastes, he rather lacks some of the charisma I was hoping to find. Anyway, most of these songs you won't hear anyone else sing but Jolson, and I found myself humming, even dancing to some of them, long after I came home.

On opening night, during the intermission of The Sound of Music at the MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE in Jupiter, a colleague of mine greeted me. "How are you liking the show?" "I really like it," I said. I think he then noticed the teardrop that had fallen to my cheek, so he found an excuse to move on.

The Sound of Music, with book by Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse, two longtime Broadway standard-bearers, is of course one of the great Richard Rodgers-Oscar Hammerstein II musicals. Commentators have noted that the names of a few of the best writers of classic musicals, like Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, Andrew Lloyd Webber, are generally headlined above the show or the stars. In other words, people turn out to see a Rodgers and Hammerstein show because they love Rodgers and Hammerstein shows.

Of course, not everyone shares that feeling. Tastes change. The colleague noted above, much younger than I, is of a generation that generally favors rock and roll or rap music over Richard Rodgers' beautiful melodies or Oscar Hammerstein's poetic words. Even when The Sound of Music was first produced in 1959, with Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel starring, some reviewers criticized it for being "too sentimental." Part of the problem nowadays, it seems to me, is that sentiment has for too long been out of fashion. And perhaps a problem relating to this show specifically is that modern audiences tend to forget the plot is based on a true story.

The play opens in a convent. Nuns sing a hymn and a little song about Maria, who is one of them, but something of a free spirit. "How do you hold a moonbeam in your hands?" they ask. Meanwhile, a widower, a World One hero named Captain Georg von Trapp, has many children and a need for someone to help take care of them. He appeals to the nuns for help. Maria is sent to his home to do the job. The captain is a disciplinarian, befitting a military man. He's also engaged to be married anew. But what really sets him apart is that in his native Austria, he's anti-Nazi; Germans want to occupy his country, and most of the people around him favor it.

Maria charms the children, teaches them to sing, teaches them, one might say, to love, at least to love their father. With time, Maria also charms the Captain, but a misunderstanding finds her back once more in the convent.

Yes, they eventually come together, fall in love and marry, yet most of Act Two is concerned with the Nazis and the threat they pose. As a War hero, the German Nazis want von Trapp to work with Hitler's Third Reich. His conscience will not allow that. He and Maria agree they will have to leave their home, flee the country they love and find a sanctuary somewhere. How they go about doing this with their children is much the subject of Act Two. To me, the need to survive is hardly mere sentimentality.

I do really like the show. I have always liked it. And this production is just fine. True, Catherine Walker as Maria is not Mary Martin or Julie Andrews, who played the role in the motion picture, yet after a while she won me over, too. She's probably closer to the actual Maria than the two better-known stars. Michael Sharon as the Captain doesn't miss a step. He's good. The cast is the largest the Maltz Theatre has ever assembled, with assorted children and Nazis turning the whole thing into an ensemble show. To the theater's credit, it has an actor's training school, and the students in this production have every right to be very proud of themselves. Kudos to everyone in the cast! And kudos to Marc Robin, who directed and choreographed. Considering the limited budget the Maltz must have, the production is quite lavish: lots of costume changes, notable sets achieved with terrific carpenters, light and sound crews and computers.

Don't expect this to be the movie, which was shot on location in Austria. Enjoy what's here, and most emphatically, enjoy the sounds of Rodgers and Hammerstein. Also, trust me: it's okay to laugh and shed a tear or two.

PLAY REVIEW: CLYBOURNE PARK: IS IT CENTURY VILLAGE?

CLYBOURNE PARK, produced by the CALDWELL THEATRE COMPANY in the Count de Hoernle Theatre in Boca Raton, is a comedy-drama with which longtime Century Village residents can readily identify. So can people of London, where Bruce Norris's play won the Best Play Award in 2010. So can people of New York City and Chicago, where the play is set, Act One taking place in a "modest three-bedroom bungalow" in 1959 and Act Two occurring in the same location fifty years later.

Clybourne Park, which was in the running for a 2010 Pulitzer Prize here in America, is about the process of change. Neighborhoods change. Century Village began as a retirement community where, by accident or design, mostly Jewish families came to retire. Predominantly from the northeast or midwestern United States, they left behind children and other family members to live with folks their own age. Now, fifty years later, the community is quite mixed, many newcomers having come from European or Caribbean countries or from Canada. Quite a few have families close by, but the central point here is that their cultural backgrounds differ from that of the original settlers. And there are, in today's terms, underlying "culture wars."

Something quite similar happens in Clybourne Park. In 1959, a family in an all-white neighborhood sells its home to a black couple. Trouble rears its ugly head. A local bigot says, among other things, in essence, "They're not like us," and "Maybe you can walk away from here. It won't matter to you what goes on here, but our property values will go down, and the neighborhood will decline."

Playwright Norris also says, in essence, "The more things change, the more they stay the same." In 2009, Clybourne Park hasn't necessarily declined, but the now-integrated community is fighting a developer who wants to build high-rises on their land. The essential argument: "There goes the neighborhood!" Meanwhile, underneath it all, racial tensions exist.

Lurking in the background, yet much at the core of Clybourne Park, is another theme: Why did the original home seller want to leave his community? He had a son who fought in the Korean War, who came home, committed an anti-social act, was damned by his neighbors for it and later hanged himself in an upstairs bedroom. The father has never gotten over this. He blames himself for the tragedy. He blames the government for sending his son to war. He blames the neighbors. In his soul, he hates. And he sells his property because of the memories that still haunt him.

Mr. Norris spoke with Clive Cholerton, Artistic Director of the Caldwell and the Director of this play. Mr. Cholerton records part of that conservation in his program notes. Here's the playwright speaking: "We still have these two wars going on, and it begins to dawn on me, perhaps it isn't a black/white thing. Maybe it's just that humans are innately territorial and everything is just an outgrowth of that. Regardless of the war -- Korea, Vietnam, gang warfare, or a bidding war for a single family home -- human beings, on some level, instinctively desire to defend their turf while at the same time want to exert dominance over another."

What if he's right? "The more things change --"

Withal, Clybourne Park is at times very funny. One cannot help but laugh. The ensemble cast of eight is terrific: Note especially veterans Kenneth Kay and Margery Lowe. The technical staff, headed by the always reliable Tim Bennett, does things just right. The trunk, the play's umbilical cord, which I've not previously mentioned, almost steals the show. A real thought-provoking play, this one. Go see it. Closing date is February 6.

PLAY REVIEW: FREUD'S LAST SESSION AT PALM BEACH DRAMAWORKS

Freud's Last Session, by Mark St. Germain, to be seen at PALM BEACH DRAMAWORKS' current home on Banyan Street in West Palm Beach, is a short, well-crafted one-act play. It takes place in Sigmund Freud's study in London during the opening days of World War Two, specifically, September 3, 1939. Freud, world-renowned father of psychoanalysis and author, has fled from his home in Austria to escape the Nazis. Born Jewish and persecuted for it, Freud has become an atheist.

To his home comes a visitor, youthful C.S. Lewis, a British professor who was an atheist and has now formally converted to Christianity. In time, long after the events of this day have passed, Lewis would be recognized as a highly prolific author of books, both fiction and non-fiction, primarily on the subject of Christianity. He was a popularizer of Christian thought.

Unfortunately, I have to interject a bit of myself into this play review. Although I'm an Arts and Entertainment writer and have been so for some 40-odd years, I am primarily an educator and lecturer. Among subjects I have taught and continue to teach are all the Great Religions.

For me, then, this play, viewed as a debate between two great intellectuals, is frankly superficial. If you want a contemporary atheist's view of life and deity, read Stephen Dawkins, prominent scientist turned atheist-popularizer. Supporters of religious faith would do well to read the books of Karen Armstrong, former nun who determined she could be of more use to God by leaving the convent and working outside the church. She writes, as I teach, on all religions.

The play is very well directed by William Hayes and is very well acted by Dennis Creaghan as Freud and Christopher Oden as Lewis. Mr. Creaghan is much better served by the playwright's script. Freud is dying of cancer, coughing, spitting up blood; his impending death and the bombing of wartime London are the play's dramatic highlights, the play being otherwise a verbal joust. As it is, all Lewis can do is sympathize and offer help to his poor host.

It should be noted that following World War Two's Holocaust, in which six million Jews were killed, many survivors became atheists. How could it happen? How could a good and just God allow it to happen? During the Cold War period, a similar thing happened in Cambodia, a country where almost all the people are Buddhists. Following The Killing Fields, where Pol Pot's Khymer Rouge slaughtered one million of their own countrymen, many survivors came to doubt God's existence.

Yet to this day countless millions of believers in God across the globe find comfort, inspiration, hope and joy in their belief. Sociologists have determined that those who do believe tend to live longer than those who doubt. Many believers are passionate in their belief. I don't mean militant. I mean, to use a religious term, they feel God with "heart and soul."

Lack of passion on the part of C.S. Lewis is what I most find lacking in Mr. St. Germain's play-script.

Freud is dying. He's suffers great physical pain and emotional stress. The world to him understandably looks bleak, and he lets that be known. But where is C.S. Lewis to state the counter-argument that no matter how dark the world may appear, there is light yet to come? I'm not arguing Lewis' case here. But if his play is to be balanced, the playwright should just as passionately argue the case for God as well as he does the case for God's absence.

I think that most audiences will like the play as it stands. I like this production: I could fall in love with Michael Amico's set design -- but I find the play somewhat disturbing for the things it doesn't say.

PLAY REVIEW: GOLDIE, MAX AND MILK AT FLORIDA STAGE

Let's say this for Goldie, Max and Milk: The World Premiere Play by Karen Hartman currently at FLORIDA STAGE in its new KRAVIS CENTER home has subject matter as contemporary as one gets in the American theater.

Max (Erin Joy Schmidt) is a single mother, a Brooklyn, New York lesbian who has just given birth and is having trouble nursing. (That's "milk".) The hospital arranges for Goldie (Deborah Sherman) to advise her. Goldie is an "Orthodox Jewish lactation specialist," (something I confess I never knew existed until I saw this play.) Max is unemployed. Her house is falling apart. Her ex-lover, Lisa, (Carla Harting) has left her, having decided she wants to go "straight". Lisa's brother Mike, who earns his living by selling illegal drugs, (David Hemphill) has fathered Max's baby. Goldie, meanwhile, has a daughter, Shayna (Sarah Lord,) who is tempted both by Max and her life-style and the substance sold by Mike.

Obviously, the opportunity for conflict in this play is almost everywhere. The playwright and Director Margaret Ledford emphasize the conservative perspective by having Goldie be as strict, stern and disapproving as she can be. The liberal view has Lisa returning and stressing that she still feels strong love for Max (and her newborn.) Plus, young Shayna has a predisposition for Max and Mike's wares.

This is a curious play that will surely have both supporters and detractors. (I liked it for what it is, a portayal of life in one segment of society. My Significant Other did not.) My principal objection, and it's rather a strong one, is that the Jewish woman is portrayed as being totally inflexible, making her seem at all times unsympathetic. (She could as easily have been a Catholic or Protestant woman. Max, Lisa and Mike are Christian.) How or why Goldie's daughter came to be what she is also deserves further description from the playwright. (Do teenagers just walk into a stranger's home and immediately adapt to this new, totally different environment?) In fact, none of the characters are sufficiently fleshed out. This is at bottom a television soap opera or situation comedy, an installment of which will have some viewers anxiously awaiting the next episode and others switching to another channel. A word of caution: The play, which is well produced, is for mature adults.

Review by Irv Rikon: Vices: A Love Story

I didn't see Vices: A Love Story in July 2009, when THE CALDWELL THEATRE in Boca Raton gave the musical its World Premiere production. Now it's back at the Caldwell through December 12, and this time I've seen it. Meanwhile, in 2009, the show garnered eight Carbonell Award nominations and actually received two awards. AC Ciulla won for his choreography, and Holly Shunkey won as Best Leading Actress in a Musical. Just for the record, music and lyrics were written by Susan Draus, Everett Bradley, Michael Heitzman and Ilene Reid. The latter two are credited with writing the story.

So -- how do I feel about it and, more importantly, do I think you will like it?

The show really breaks new ground. Clive Cholerton, who directed the Premiere and the current production, and choreographer AC Ciulla clearly were seeking something "different," and they found it. Ms. Shunkey is back and teamed with male dancer Albert Blaise Cattafi. Together, they are outstanding. The dances and the dancers are very much the show's highlights. This is a mixed media event, with large screens on both sides of the stage showing imaginative original film clips that enhance the onstage action. The technical staff of Tim Bennett, John D. Hall, Dustin Hamilton and Sean Lawson create technological wonders here, adding to the story line.

Yet there's no story line as such. This is a revue. The dancers fall in love. Four others: Carlos L. Encinias, Danielle Lee Greaves, Lara Janine and Will Lee-Williams sing about them accompanied by an onstage band (20 original songs,) or they perform their daily tasks, enjoy their various entertainments, fall out of love and carry on with others.

In short, the show is fresh, loud, sassy, bawdy, vulgar. It's not a show for those who were nurtured by and still treasure the Great American Songbook. It's for those who grew up with hard rock, acid rock, rap and all the assorted paraphernalia younger generations may know. Some older folks like to identify with whatever is "in." They will like this. -- I'll return to Ms. Shunkey. She's an excellent dancer, yet she has no spoken dialogue. The Carbonell she won was for being the "Best Leading Actress in a Musical." There were very good actresses who spoke and emoted in last season's musicals. What was the Awards Committee thinking?

Next up at the Caldwell is a "thought-provoking comedy," Clybourne Park, about white and black families in a middle-class Chicago neighborhood. Running dates are January 2 - February 6. Review by Irv Rikon: Twelve Angry Men

PLAY REVIEW: TWELVE ANGRY MEN AT THE MALTZ

Reginald Rose's courtroom drama Twelve Angry Men first entered Americans' conscience in 1954, when it was introduced on television. It later became a popular motion picture starring Henry Fonda, and now it's to be seen as a stage play at the MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE in Jupiter.

The script itself is a testimonial to American democracy. In this country an accused person standing trial is assumed to be innocent until proved guilty. That's in stark contrast to most other countries, where persons charged with a crime are compelled to prove their innocence. Twelve Angry Men further makes the bold assumption that one righteous man can change the opinion of eleven of his peers. The script begins when a dozen jurors are called into a small room to deliberate the fate of a young man accused of killing an elder. A preliminary vote is taken. All but one of the jurors finds the accused guilty. Even the twelfth man does not argue that he is innocent. But is the accused "guilty beyond a reasonable doubt"? which is another cornerstone of American jurisprudence. In other words, if there be any doubt whatsoever that the individual charged did not commit the crime in question, that individual must be judged "not guilty" and set free. One by one, as eleven men give their reasons for deciding against the accused, the twelfth man provides sufficient doubt to impel re-thinking of their arguments.

Mr. Rose's script itself is strong, and despite its "liberal" bias in a country that more than half a century later has largely become "conservative," it holds up very well. An American ideal is well served here. More useful perhaps is comparing the various media: television, motion picture and live theater in which the script takes life. On screen, the play is very much a star vehicle. Twelve Angry Men, the movie, not only starred Henry Fonda; he also produced it, and used it as a vehicle to display his own considerable talents. Film can focus on a star and only on a star when it needs to. On stage, this courtroom is "live,"and the twelve men in it are more of an ensemble. No one person dominates. It would be possible for one personality to dominate if a strong director would stage it to to favor one man, but Frank Galati, the director here, chooses not to go that route. In the film, Mr. Fonda, always soft-voiced, nonetheless prevails. On the Maltz stage, the actor playing the same role is also small-voiced, but at any given moment, louder voices compel the viewer in their direction and the star role, if there be one, is diminished.

One of the surprising things about the show at the Maltz is that it lacks intimacy as compared with the screen versions. A film can show men close-up: -- scorning, shouting, tormenting, laughing, weeping -- better than a stage play in which chairs are of necessity sometimes turned with their backs to the audience. Mr. Galati directs well, but at the very end, he misses a key visual element of the script by blocking one of the men. Mr. Galati also told The Palm Beach Post's Hap Erstein that he sees the play as a comedy, and a few people in the audience occasionally laughed at some of the lines. But this is a tense script that builds towards a riveting climax: laughter is something of a distraction in this setting.

You'll like Twelve Angry Men: It grabs at you, gives you pause, makes you ponder what it means to be an American. It's the sort of play, actually, that you wish everyone, including school children -- perhaps, especially, school children -- and persons new to America would/could see. It speaks to the values of our society.

A new theatrical musical, Academy, arrives December 7, and in early 2011 the Maltz has three big musicals most Century Villagers would take to their hearts: The Sound of Music, Jolson at the Winter Garden and the Gershwin Brothers' Crazy for You.
